Samsung was the pioneer of “phablets”, smartphones, large-format, half-way between a smartphone and a tablet, and achieved such success with its Galaxy Note, other manufacturers, including its arch-rival Apple, they were forced to offer smartphones of 5.5-inch as a complement to their smartphones top of the range.
When you compare the iPhone 7 Plus with the Galaxy Note 7, it excels in several key aspects: screen 5.7-inch versus the 5.5″ of 7 Plus, higher resolution, and higher capacity RAM memory, but these advantages also make more demands on the battery. Even so, the Note 7 is lighter than the iPhone 7 Plus and almost of the same thickness.
to meet the demands of smartphones that are thinner and of higher performance, users demand greater autonomy of the battery. This led to the manufacturers to the decision to seal the battery inside of the computer –Apple was the pioneer in this– as a user replaceable battery is usually thicker. The Galaxy Note 4 was the latest “phablet” from Samsung with a replaceable battery by the user.
Ion and miracles
The engineers and designers have then to produce batteries almost miraculous, very thin and with the ability to feed these modern computers mobiles who have a big appetite for energy, which is nothing more than a stream of ions which flows into the lithium battery is discharged.
The process of loading consists in accumulating the ions at one electrode and then to repeat the cycle. Apple managed to encapsulate in the iPhone 7 Plus a battery of 2,900 mAh that lasts more than a day with an average consumption of 100 milliamps per hour. Samsung took that capacity to 3,500 mAh in the Note 7, or the equivalent of 35 hours of battery life with the same consumption.
There is a delicate balance in this ebb and flow between the electrodes, which are physically separated by films of, but still allow the traffic of ions. These films or plates, separators suffered from inadequate pressure for a “production error,” according to the succinct explanation offered by Samsung when they started to replace the Note 7 that began to explode in the hands of the users. Defects in the separators caused –presumably – the perforation of the membranes separators: a short-circuit current runaway, and extreme heat leading to the ignition.
Statistically, some 200 Note 7 sacrificed on the altar of extreme competition represent less than 0.01 percent, but the risk of spontaneous combustion, even with very small probability, it is outrageous, in teams so personal that are attached to the face to speak, for example, or are placed two centimeters from the eyes in helmets of virtual reality.
If there was another episode to culminate in disaster, some five terminals replacement also gave way to spontaneous combustion, which led the leader to halt the production and marketing of the infamous Galaxy Note 7.
the million-dollar losses are compounded by the damage to the brand. Samsung offers, the Note 7 acquired in the united STATES, return the money or give away 100 dollars if it is changed by a Samsung smartphone. The resurrection of the Galaxy Note is more difficult, unless there is a very attractive option with replaceable battery by the user.
a 29.6% cut in profits for Samsung this quarter, then removing from the market the Galaxy 7 the problems of self-combustion. The percentage means that you will receive 4.628 million dollars less than estimated. The company will have to return to its customers the amount (882 U.s. dollars) when returned to the more than 2 million devices sold
